Kohoj Fort is in a dilapidated state and has remained abandoned for centuries. Kohoj has a moderately difficult gradient and it takes about two and a half hours to reach the main plateau from Vaghote village which is situated at the base of the fort. Access to Kohoj Fort is via the main trek trail at which breaks from the Kohoj Fort road near the Saltwater lake on the Wada-Manor road. On reaching the plateau of the fort, a temple of Lord Shankar can be seen, which has now been rehabilitated. Two cisterns can be seen in front of the temple. One of the routes descends from the left side of the temple, where seven adjoined cisterns are located. One of the cisterns bears clean water. The other two cisterns have been spoiled, the remaining four being clogged. Few remnants in dilapidated state can be seen to the right of the temple.  The fort is said to be about 800 years old and finds a mention in the Purandar Treats along with 22 other forts which were surrendered by Shivaji Maharaj to the Mugals on 11 June 1665. It was also an important fort for keeping a look on the near by coast and thus to keep the territory safe and secure.

Situated not too far from Mumbai, the Kohoj Fort sits in the backdrop of a heart-shaped lake forming a beautiful scenery. Its reflection in the water is not to be missed, as the trail takes you by the saltwater lake’s edge, around the fort and to the top. Two giant stone men, somewhat like Groot, will welcome you at the pinnacle of the fort.  Get ready to meet them after a moderate climb! Built during the Bhoj period, Kohoj fort now stands mostly as a historical ruin. It was one of the 23 forts surrendered by Shivaji under the Purandar Treaty that he signed with the Mughals in 1665. The Vaitarna river flows by at a distance, while rest of the area is covered under nature’s green carpet during monsoons. Two huge stone structures, that roughly look like human figures, can be seen at the top, as if still guarding the fort. Kohoj Fort is visible from the Mumbai-Ahemdabad highway.

Kohoj, the hill fort is situated in Palghar region. One can see this fort while traveling on Mumbai-Ahmadabad highway near Manor Naka. This fort is at about 12 kms from Wada.  We will be taking the route which starts from Waghote. This village is located on Manor-wada route at around 8 kms from Mumbai-Ahmadabad highway. One can reach to the top of Kohoj within 3 hrs from the base village. We can find the name of Kohoj in the list of those 23 forts, which were surrendered by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Purandar treaty with Mughal on 11 June 1665.
